Mark Clennon

Mark Clennon

Mark Clennon is a commercial and editorial photographer and director based in Los Angeles. He makes portraits and cultural documentation centered on Black life, family, masculinity, and place, with a strong hand for light and a refusal to make people perform for the camera. He arrived at the work sideways. After five years in programmatic advertising at AOL and Yahoo, he picked up a camera in 2016 and left his corporate job the following year. In 2020, his photographs of the George Floyd protests in New York became his first spread in TIME and changed the direction of his career. In 2026, he photographed LeBron James for the cover of TIME. His clients include Nike, Adidas, Apple, Netflix, PUMA, Vogue, ESSENCE, and TIME. His personal work has been acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of the City of New York, and he is a recipient of the Lucie Award, the ADCOLOR Catalyst Award, and the University of South Florida's Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Clennon directs motion alongside stills. He keeps a continuous personal practice of long-form documentary projects, hand-printed film work, and writing, and that practice feeds what he brings to client work. He is represented by Apostrophe.

Two shoots, broken down piece by piece. Mark Clennon walks through the TIME cover portrait of LeBron James, conceived in a 48-hour window and shot inside the Lakers practice facility, and a national jewelry campaign made with the client standing behind the monitor. For each one, he shows the research, the mood board, the lighting plan, what changed on the day, and the frames that didn't make it.

Attendees will learn how to build a mood board that survives client revisions and still gets you the picture you wanted, and how to plan lighting around the feeling you're after instead of chasing a trend. Mark will break down how to direct a subject you may only have twelve minutes with, and how to make the call when the plan breaks on set and the clock is running. You'll also come away understanding how selects, printing, and retouching decisions shape the final look, long after the shoot itself is over.
