Rachel Owen

Rachel Owen is a photographer living and working with her husband and son in the Chicagoland area. As an Adobe Certified Photoshop Expert, she often merges photos of her subjects, shot in studio on a green screen, into miniature objects, or combines multiple photographs to create a new setting that does not exist in the real world.

Rachel is a Portrait Masters Fellow, ICON Triple Master, PPA Master Photographer, and consecutive Diamond Photographer of the Year, and has represented the United States multiple times in the World Photographic Cup. She was ranked the world's number one portrait photographer in 2022 by One Eyeland and 2024's Digital Artist of the Year by IIC, and has earned numerous first-place awards in international professional photography competitions.

Rachel's primary goal when photographing anyone is to make the person in front of her lens feel empowered, and to have that empowerment show up and provoke the viewer. Her images are often described as surreal and whimsical, taking the viewer into a fantasy that blurs the lines of reality and fiction. Rachel describes her own passion for creating as: "A fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones. I grow weary of holding it back, until I cannot.

Step into a world where ordinary locations become the foundation for extraordinary images. In this hands-on photo walk, Rachel Owen will work with fantasy-inspired models to explore how posing, light, and location can come together to tell a story. Attendees will learn to blend natural light with flash to create dramatic, surreal portraits while adapting to whatever the location offers. Rachel will also share the problem-solving techniques behind her composite work, including how to create with minimal equipment and how to photograph background plates when a great location doesn't come with a model attached. Attendees will learn to think beyond the photograph they're taking today and capture the pieces needed to create something entirely new later in the studio. What you'll learn: how to pose and direct models with intention to create images that tell a story, how to balance natural light with flash for dramatic, fantasy-inspired portraits, how to problem-solve creatively when working on location with limited equipment, how to photograph effective background plates for future studio composites, and how to train your eye to see the creative possibilities in unexpected locations. Recommended gear: bring your camera and favorite portrait lens. A wider lens is also helpful for capturing environmental portraits and background plates. Participants are encouraged to travel light, since the ability to create with minimal equipment is part of the experience.
